Frequently asked questions

What is Biltong?

A traditional South African meat snack made from salt-cured strips of meat, seasoned with key spices like coriander and black pepper and marinaded in vinegar. It is slowed dried in a controlled environment for approximately 7 days.

With no artificial preservatives, Moncho biltong is a healthy, high-density source of protein that is ideal for snacking, hiking, camping or muscle recovery after gym. It also, just tastes delicious!

Is Biltong Similar to Jerky?

They might both be dried meats, but that’s really where the similarities end.

Jerky is usually marinated in sauces and dried quickly at high heat (above 70°C), which gives it a chewy texture and smoky flavour.

Biltong, on the other hand, is cured with salt and traditional South African spices, then air-dried slowly over several days at much lower temperatures. The result? A more tender texture and a richer, more natural flavour.

Both are delicious - but we’ll admit, we’re team biltong all the way!

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is calculated based on your location and the items in your order. You will always know the shipping price before you purchase.

What are your guidelines for shelf life?

Keep in mind, Moncho biltong is a natural meat product made without artificial preservatives - we’d rather sacrifice a bit of shelf life than compromise on quality or health.

Our current shelf life is around 8 weeks unrefrigerated and up to 6 months if kept refrigerated. The best before date on each pack is based on cool, room-temperature storage.

Note, that factors like heat, light, moisture, and oxygen can shorten shelf life - for example, leaving it in a hot car isn’t ideal.

Once opened, we recommend eating your biltong within 3 days, or a little longer if you keep it in the fridge.

Biltong seems quite expensive. Why is that?

Biltong is a dried meat which removes most of the moisture. We dry our biltong to approximately 45% of the original meat weight.

In terms of a prepared restaurant steak, a 120g bag is the equivalent of a 266g steak. The difference is that biltong takes around 8 days to cure and dry and includes packaging.

When will I get my order?

We work quickly to ship your order as soon as possible. Once your order has shipped, you will receive an email with further information. Delivery times may vary depending on the courier and location. Some couriers also have delays over the weekends.

Is Moncho biltong Keto?

Our biltong aligns closely with keto principles - it’s high in protein, low in carbs, and made with simple, natural ingredients. We use grass-fed beef, quality spices, and a touch of malt vinegar for flavour.

While we don’t label it specifically as keto, that’s mainly because we use a trace amount of muscovado sugar and malt vinegar during the curing process. The total carbs per bag are still extremely low (well under one gram), so it’s perfectly suitable for anyone following a keto or low-carb lifestyle.

Is Moncho Biltong gluten-free?

Our biltong gets its flavour from a small amount of malt vinegar used in the curing process. Malt vinegar comes from barley, which means it may contain trace levels of gluten. We will be looking into gluten-free options as we keep refining our recipes.

Is our blitong halal?

We are not currently halal certified.

Is Moncho a registered food business?

Yes. Our kitchen is fully registered under the Food Act. Everything we make meets New Zealand food safety standards.

Where are your products manufactured?

We carefully manufacture our products locally in Auckland, to the highest quality.
